Wicklow man convicted of rape challenges victim anonymity

By Fionn Kelly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The 41-year-old Wicklow man, convicted of rape and sentenced to seven years, had an anonymity challenge heard at the Central Criminal Court on 30 May 2019.

The challenge concerned whether a rape complainant could waive anonymity so the convicted offender could be named. The judge said he would deliver a written judgment on 28 June 2019 after written submissions from the DPP and defence.

DPP counsel argued that the law protected the complainant but did not prevent her from waiving anonymity, while defence counsel argued that publishing her identity remained an offence.
