Wayne McCauley was jailed for 18 months after pleading guilty to assault causing harm to his mother at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The offence occurred on 17 June 2023.

The court heard that during an argument, McCauley grabbed his mother’s hand and bent her finger until it cracked, leaving a fractured metacarpal bone. In mitigation, his barrister said McCauley had sustained a severe brain injury in a meat cleaver attack in the late 2010s and had a mild intellectual disability and difficulty handling stress.
