Unnamed student loses challenge to Mandarin exam marking

By Orla Quinn

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

An unnamed student’s challenge over the Mandarin Chinese Leaving Certificate marking scheme was dismissed by the High Court, as reported on 29 May 2024.

The student had argued that the scheme discriminated against candidates using traditional characters. The judge rejected the claims, finding the student had not established a breach of the 1998 Education Act.

The ruling also said candidates had equal opportunity to prepare and would be assessed against the same syllabus and marking scheme. It noted traditional characters were not automatically treated as incorrect.
