This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Tomas Gajowniczek was found not guilty by reason of insanity of attempting to murder his partner, Alicja Kalinowska, at the Central Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 27 April 2018.

He pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and to intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Ms Kalinowska. Both charges related to their home on 16 June 2016.

After almost nine hours of deliberation, the jury found him not guilty by reason of insanity on both counts.

Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy committed Mr Gajowniczek to the Central Mental Hospital. He was due to return to court on 9 May, when a doctor would say whether he was suffering from a mental disorder and needed ongoing inpatient care.

Defence counsel Ronan Munro SC said psychiatrists who had assessed Mr Gajowniczek had stated during the trial that he was no longer suffering from a mental disorder. He added that he understood why the court would send him for assessment.
