A 17-year-old boy has been sentenced to eight years’ detention for the attempted murder of Defence Forces chaplain Fr Paul Murphy, whom he stabbed at Renmore Barracks in Galway on 15 August 2024. The boy, who was 16 at the time, had pleaded guilty and cannot be identified because of his age.
The Central Criminal Court heard that the teenager had no previous convictions and was diagnosed with autism after the offence. The sentencing judge said online material had shaped his radicalised views and that he had intended to attack a member of the Defence Forces. Mr Justice Paul McDermott imposed a 10-year sentence, with the final two years suspended for three years, taking account of the boy’s age, immaturity, guilty plea and remorse.
