A 17-year-old boy has been sentenced to eight years’ detention for attempting to murder Defence Forces chaplain Fr Paul Murphy. The boy, who was 16 at the time of the attack, pleaded guilty last February. Mr Justice Paul McDermott imposed a 20-year headline sentence, reduced to 10 years because of the defendant’s age, immaturity, early guilty plea and remorse, with the final two years suspended for three years.

The court heard that the boy attacked Murphy with a knife at Renmore Barracks in Galway on August 15, 2024, after becoming radicalised online. The judge said the defendant had sought to kill a member of the Defence Forces and did not select Murphy because of his religious role. Murphy suffered permanent scars and arm wounds requiring surgery.

In sentencing, McDermott warned that impressionable teenagers can become “easy prey” to online groups spreading their “poison”. He said the defendant’s distorted views came from online sources, particularly Islamic State, rather than his local community.
