Stephen Cahoon pleads not guilty to murder at trial

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Stephen Cahoon has pleaded not guilty to murdering Jean Teresa Quigley. The charge concerns her death at Cornshell Fields on 26 July 2008. The proceedings were reported on 6 November 2015.

Peter Barr gave evidence at the Central Criminal Court on 5 November 2015. He said he went to Ms Quigley’s house with her mother, who had a spare key, and was downstairs when he heard her screaming upstairs.

Barr said he checked Ms Quigley’s wrist and neck for a pulse but could tell she was already dead because she felt cold. After calling police, he noticed brown tape beside the bed and picked it up. The court heard that he then saw a chrome-handled kitchen knife on a dresser and left it there.

Majella Cox, a friend of Ms Quigley for 22 years, said she had never seen her in a physical fight or involved in violence. Under cross-examination by defence counsel Michael O’Higgins, she confirmed she knew of an incident in which Stephen Cahoon had been asked to leave the house on 12 July.

The trial was continuing on 6 November 2015.
