Silviu Voivod was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to three years for assault causing harm, with the final 18 months suspended, in a decision reported on 6 December 2016. The assault happened at Dandelion Bar & Nightclub on St Stephen’s Green, Dublin, on 12 October 2014. Voivod had pleaded guilty after striking Robert McMickan in the face with a glass, knocking out his two front teeth and causing facial scarring.
Judge Melanie Greally said a strong deterrent was necessary because glassing incidents could have life-altering and severe consequences. The court also heard that McMickan required dental treatment, later had both teeth replaced, missed two weeks of college and incurred medical bills exceeding €5,000. The judge took account of Voivod’s guilty plea and lack of previous convictions when suspending the final 18 months.
