Seven Dublin men acquitted of IRA membership

By Eimear Byrne

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Brian Nick McBennett and six other Dublin men were acquitted of IRA membership by the Special Criminal Court, with the outcome reported on 30 June 2015. The men were Brian Nick McBennett, Peter Burns, Kevin Braney, Michael Barr, John Brock, Declan Phelan and Desmond Christie.

The acquittals followed the DPP’s decision to offer no further evidence after the court ruled that six arrests at a house in Tallaght were unlawful. The men had denied membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the IRA, while Peter Burns had not challenged the legality of his arrest.
