Sabrina Cummins and her brother Kenneth Cummins were on trial at the Central Criminal Court. Both pleaded not guilty to murder. They were accused of murdering 63-year-old Thomas Horan at Cambridge Court, Ringsend, Dublin 4, on 6 January 2014.
Opening the prosecution case, senior counsel Remy Farrell said the siblings had visited Thomas Horan's apartment intending to rob him. The prosecution alleged that they then decided to kill him to cover up the robbery and took steps afterwards to cover their tracks.
Mr Justice Tony Hunt told the jury that Kenneth Cummins had voluntarily chosen not to be present during the trial. He instructed jurors not to hold that decision against him. The judge said Kenneth Cummins remained within the court precincts and could attend if required or reconsider his absence. His legal team could continue presenting his case.
The trial was expected to last up to five weeks. The report covers the opening of the case and early evidence but records no verdict, sentence or later outcome.
