Roy Hicks receives a fully suspended sentence for theft from Balbriggan school

By Aoife Loughran

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Roy Hicks was sentenced to two years and five months, suspended in full on strict conditions, for stealing €91,149.25 from St George’s National School in Balbriggan while chair of its board of management. He pleaded guilty to 22 theft counts involving money taken between June 17, 2019, and November 12, 2021.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard Hicks used the money to keep his accountancy business in Wales afloat. Judge Orla Crowe described the offence as a significant breach of trust and accepted that Hicks had suffered serious health difficulties, was unable to compensate the school and was unlikely to return to court. Hicks suffered a stroke shortly after making full admissions when arrested in September 2023.
