€9m Balbriggan road scheme gets green light with up to 1,200 jobs promised

A €9m road infrastructure project that could facilitate 1,200 jobs in Balbriggan has been approved by Fingal County councillors.
The scheme will open up access to 22 hectares of land in Stephenstown and includes new access roads, a signalised junction and a cycle-friendly roundabout.
The proposed works will include 750m of new two-lane access roads, with footways and cycleways on both sides, as well as a 60m section of dual carriageway.
A two-lane roundabout will be built on the L1390 at the junction with Flemington Lane, with signalised pedestrian and cycle crossings on each arm. Four new bus stops with shelters will also be provided.
The development will include surface-water drainage infrastructure, public lighting, landscaping and other works.
The proposed development is located 1.3km west of Balbriggan on mainly undeveloped greenfield land.
Speaking at the council’s September meeting, Ciara O hAodha, senior executive with Fingal County Council, said the scheme would help open up the area for economic development.
“From an economic development perspective, the scheme will open up and provide access to 22 hectares, just over 54 acres, of industrial land, which would encourage enterprise and industries into the area,” she said.
“It would provide access to 1,200 jobs for Stephenstown and Balbriggan and the wider area.
“In alignment with that, the scheme would also open up and connect the economic zone to the town and activate active travel routes for the town and surrounding area, and most importantly for the community.
“It would include cycle tracks, footpaths and public lighting.”
Funding for the project is included in Fingal County Council’s capital programme for 2027 to 2029, with the cost estimated at €9m, Ms O hAodha added.
Cllr Tom O’Leary welcomed the plans, saying: “Balbriggan needs more jobs, and we need to keep the jobs local, in line with climate change policy. And this scheme does just that.”
The proposal was approved by councillors.
