Richard Dekker loses appeal against murder conviction

By Ruairí Dolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Richard Dekker lost his appeal against his murder conviction after a Central Criminal Court trial, with the ruling delivered on 27 July 2022. The conviction concerned the murder of 17-year-old Daniel McAnaspie in Blanchardstown in 2010.

A three-judge court rejected Dekker’s argument that answers from his final Garda interview should not have been admitted at trial. Mr Justice George Birmingham said the answers were admissible, despite criticising how the interview had been conducted.

Dekker was convicted by a jury in 2017, after previously being acquitted in 2013. The appeal ruling left that murder conviction in place.
