Raymond McElwaine jailed for 18 months for sexually abusing his daughter

By Aoife Loughran

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Raymond McElwaine was sentenced to two and a half years, with the final year suspended, for sexually abusing his daughter. He was jailed for the remaining 18 months after pleading guilty to eight sample counts of indecent assault and sexual assault.

The offences took place at the former family home between June 1988 and December 1994, when his daughter was aged between six and 11. Judge Karen O’Connor cited the breach of trust and McElwaine’s dominant position as aggravating factors, while also considering his previous good character, health issues and low risk of reoffending.

The judge commended Jennifer Lydon McElwaine for coming forward because she was concerned about other children. She described the continuing effects of the abuse in her victim impact statement.
