The Court of Appeal dismissed Prince Ajibola's appeal against his money laundering sentence on 15 October 2019. Mr Justice Edwards delivered the court's judgment.

Ajibola pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Court on 26 March 2019 to a charge of money laundering. The indictment concerned his handling of €32,000 in proceeds of crime on or about 9 August 2016, while knowing, believing or being reckless as to whether the money was the proceeds of criminal conduct.

On 29 May 2019, he was sentenced to four years in prison, with the final two years suspended. The conditions required him to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for two years after release, enter into a €100 bond and immediately pay €1,900 to the prosecuting garda for transfer to the injured party.

Ajibola argued that the sentence was excessive, unduly severe and disproportionate. He contended that the sentencing judge had over-assessed the gravity of the case and allowed insufficient discount for mitigation.

The appeal court found no error of principle in the assessment of gravity or mitigation. It considered the discount for mitigation more than adequate and dismissed the appeal.
