Peter Jackson was sentenced to life for murder at the Central Criminal Court on 23 November 2015.
Jackson stabbed David Hamilton during an argument over heroin at a house on Kerryhall Road, Cork, on 4 May 2012.
He had admitted killing Mr Hamilton but denied murder, before a jury convicted him of murder. As he was led to prison, Jackson apologised and said he had not set out to do it.
The court heard that Mr Hamilton's family described the 31-year-old musician's death as an absence that had marred every family event.
