Joachim Ruckweld, 70, was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two years and nine months in prison, with the final six months suspended on strict conditions. Judge Dara Hayes backdated the sentence to when Ruckweld went into custody. The proceedings were reported on November 25, 2025.
Ruckweld pleaded guilty to importing cocaine for sale or supply at Dublin Airport on November 17, 2024.
Garda Lee Jones gave evidence that Ruckweld arrived on a flight from Zurich and was seen acting suspiciously. An X-ray of his luggage revealed an anomaly, and a search found 20 packages containing 4kg of cocaine valued at €280,250.
Ruckweld said he had packed the luggage himself and that it contained coffee beans. He told gardaí he did not know what was in the suitcase but believed it was untoward. He said he had been instructed to meet someone in Ireland, denied he was due to be paid and said he had not done it before.
Ruckweld had no previous convictions. Jones agreed with defence counsel Padraig Dwyer SC's suggestion that Ruckweld was a bit naïve and accepted his assertion that he had not made a trip like this before. Dwyer said there was no evidence of a criminal record anywhere and asked the court to treat his client as stupid and naïve for becoming involved.
Judge Hayes said no explanation had been provided for why Ruckweld engaged in the behaviour. While it might have been his first trip, the judge said, he knew what he was doing was wrong. The judge treated his assistance to serious criminal elements as an aggravating factor and considered mitigation before sentencing him.
