Patrick Harty was jailed at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 19 February 2025 after Judge Martin Nolan imposed five years for four theft counts and unlawful use of a car, suspending the final year on strict conditions.
Harty pleaded guilty to all five counts. The proceedings were reported on 20 February 2025.
The offending occurred between 31 May 2023 and 1 January 2024 and involved about €20,000 of property taken in 24 opportunistic thefts across Leinster, including a wedding handbag and luggage taken after he posed as hotel security.
The investigating garda said no property was recovered, while accepting that Harty was of limited intelligence, that violence was not generally part of his modus operandi and that his plea was valuable. Defence counsel Cathal McGreal BL told the court that Harty had suffered a childhood brain injury, neglect and violence, and had alcoholism, limited literacy and neurological deficits; a psychological assessment found a high risk of reoffending without treatment and support.
Harty was also directed to undergo one year of post-release supervision by the Probation Services.
