This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Osama Sarhan, 27, of Belvedere Place, Dublin 1, was sentenced to five years in prison, with the final 12 months suspended on strict conditions to encourage rehabilitation.

Sarhan pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary in Dublin city centre and assault causing harm to two women on February 11, 2024, and to two further burglaries in Dublin on February 14, 2024.

A detective garda said Sarhan entered the women’s bedroom armed with a knife. One woman was injured in a struggle that continued onto the road, where Sarhan continued to strike out with the knife and bit her. The knife was later found under a nearby car. The detective also said Sarhan was arrested three days later at another burglary after a resident saw him smashing a window with a tree branch.

The detective agreed with defence counsel Karl Monahan BL that the knife had been taken from the building and the victims noticed it was not sharp. It was accepted that Sarhan’s DNA was not found on the knife or runners left at the scene, and that his guilty plea was of value to the prosecution.

The witness agreed that Sarhan had said in interview that he had not taken his medication in the days before the incident and had been drinking. It was also accepted that he expressed remorse. Victim impact statements were handed to the court but were not read out.

Judge Martin Nolan described the aggravated burglary as serious. He accepted that Sarhan was going through a difficult time, that drugs had affected his judgment and that he appeared not to be an inherently violent person.
