Moise Rostas has sentence reduced for jewellery theft

By Saoirse Doyle

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Moise Rostas had his three-year sentence for jewellery theft reduced by the Court of Appeal on 26 May 2016.

The court suspended the final nine months for two years, subject to €5,000 compensation being paid to the shop owner.

Rostas had pleaded guilty at Monaghan Circuit Criminal Court after jewellery worth €20,000 was stolen from McGuigans Jewellers in Castleblaney on 28 December 2012.

The appeal court found that the original sentence had been based on an error concerning the shop owner and a staff member being present during the theft.

The court also required Rostas to enter a good-behaviour bond, while noting his lack of previous convictions and rehabilitation in prison.
