McAleer & Rushe Contracts UK Ltd was fined €100,000 for an asbestos risk-assessment breach at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 9 March 2020. The case arose from workers’ exposure to asbestos fibres during the conversion of Findlater House in Dublin city centre into a hotel.

The company had pleaded guilty to failing to assess whether ceiling boards contained asbestos before they were removed. The boards were taken down, broken up and placed in large bins on 23 June 2016, generating asbestos-containing dust.

The Health and Safety Authority said its investigation concluded that workers were exposed to asbestos, a known carcinogen. The company was registered in the UK.
