Marius Purcil received an aggregate eight-year sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, with the final two years suspended on terms, leaving six years to serve.
He pleaded guilty on 28 March 2019 to sexual assault and assault causing harm. A jury had been sworn the previous day.
The offences followed an attack on a receptionist at a Chinese holistic therapy centre on Mary Street, Dublin, on 21 January 2017.
The sentencing judge imposed three years for assault causing harm and five years for sexual assault, to run consecutively. The judge considered Purcil’s guilty pleas, remorse and personal history in mitigation.
Purcil appealed his sentence, arguing that the offences arose from a single incident and should have attracted concurrent sentences. The Court of Appeal judgment was delivered by Ms Justice Kennedy on 6 October 2020.
