Limerick brothers’ rape appeal fails at Court of Appeal

By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The unnamed Limerick brothers lost their appeal against rape convictions at the Court of Appeal, reported on 31 October 2023.

The brothers had been convicted after a Central Criminal Court trial in November 2021 over the rape of a 14-year-old girl; the source says the incident occurred in the west of Ireland on 22 April 2017.

The appeal challenged the jury directions about whether a Garda’s question in an interview could be treated as evidence. The Court of Appeal rejected the challenge, finding no reason to believe the jury disregarded the judge’s supplemental instructions.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
