Brian Haig jailed for sexual assault after appeal

Brian Haig was resentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison, with the final 12 months suspended, by the Court of Appeal on 31 October 2023, after it found his sexual assault sentence unduly lenient.
Haig had pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault at an address in County Tipperary on 10 March 2019. Tipperary Circuit Court imposed an 18-month suspended sentence on 12 January 2023.
The Court of Appeal found the offending fell within the mid-range for gravity. It identified the cutting of the woman’s undergarments while she was asleep as the most significant factor and said this showed an element of premeditation.
