Leroy Howard and Stephen Coyle lose violent disorder appeals

By Orla Quinn

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Leroy Howard and Stephen Coyle had their violent disorder sentences upheld by the Court of Appeal on 12 May 2022. Their assaults took place in Ashbourne, Co Meath, in the early hours of 1 August 2016.

The court dismissed both appeals against the severity of their sentences. The judges found that the violence justified the sentencing judge’s 10-year headline sentence and that she had sufficiently considered their guilty pleas, personal circumstances and expressions of remorse.

Howard received a seven-and-a-half-year sentence, with the final 12 months suspended. Coyle received the same total sentence, with the final two years suspended.
