A Kildare teenager appealed his rape detention sentence at the Court of Appeal on 8 June 2023. He had been sentenced at the Central Criminal Court to one year's detention in Oberstown after a jury found him guilty of raping his seven-year-old cousin. He pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault, with nine-month detention terms running concurrently.
The sentencing judge, Ms Justice Karen O'Connor, also ordered two years of post-release supervision. Defence counsel said the teenager denied the rape and argued that 31 days remaining after remission should not be served in an adult prison. The Court of Appeal reserved its judgment.
