Dylan McMahon was sentenced to 12 years in prison, with the final two years suspended for five years under strict conditions, after being convicted of rape, aggravated sexual assault, false imprisonment and threats to kill or cause serious harm. He also pleaded guilty to assault causing harm during the trial. The judge directed that the sentence run consecutively to the sentence imposed by Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court because McMahon was on bail for those offences when he committed these offences.

Mr Justice Patrick McGrath said the relationship was an aggravating factor and cited the prolonged, repeated attacks and the “appalling level of degradation” inflicted on the woman. He said McMahon’s traumatic brain injury and mental health difficulties affected his culpability. The suspended portion carries conditions including five years’ post-release probation supervision and abstention from alcohol and illicit substances.

The court heard that during the attack in Moore Abbey Woods, McMahon raped and sexually assaulted the woman, threatened her, and pushed leaves, sticks and dog faeces into her mouth. The woman retains her right to anonymity. McMahon maintains that he did not commit the sexual offences.
