Kenneth Cummins and Sabrina Cummins went on trial at the Central Criminal Court accused of murder. Both pleaded not guilty. They were accused of murdering Thomas Horan at Cambridge Court, Ringsend, Dublin 4, on 6 January 2014.

The prosecution alleged that the siblings went to Mr Horan’s apartment intending to rob him before deciding to kill him. The trial was expected to last up to five weeks.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt told the jury that Kenneth Cummins had voluntarily chosen not to be present during the trial and that his lawyers could conduct the case on his behalf. He said Kenneth Cummins remained within the court precincts, was available if needed and could change his decision. The judge instructed jurors to draw “absolutely no adverse inference” from his absence.
