Keith Byrne was given a two-year suspended sentence for threatening hotel staff and possessing cannabis at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, reported on 3 October 2017. The offences followed an incident at Bewleys Hotel in Sandyford on 15 February 2014.
Byrne pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis herb valued at €300 and making threats to kill or cause serious harm. Judge Melanie Greally said he had made credible and frightening threats, but noted his completed residential rehabilitation programme and favourable probation report.
The sentence was suspended for two years on strict conditions after the judge concluded that imprisoning him would be counterproductive. The court also heard that Byrne had made substantial progress, was employed and had not come to further Garda attention.
