Joy Imasogie acquitted of sex trafficking and prostitution charges

By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Joy Imasogie was acquitted of trafficking and prostitution-related charges at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, as reported on 31 January 2017.

The charges concerned allegations that she organised a Nigerian woman’s illegal entry, coerced her into prostitution and controlled prostitution for gain between March 2006 and April 2008.

Judge Patricia Ryan directed the jury to find Imasogie not guilty after ruling that contradictions made it unsafe to consider the case. The judge cited evidence that conflicted with the complainant’s account of when she stopped working as a prostitute, alongside other unexplained inconsistencies.
