The High Court gave Joseph Connor permission to bring judicial review proceedings over alleged wrongful detention, reported on 16 November 2021. The case arose from his arrest in Drogheda on 19 July 2021 over an alleged public order offence.

Connor spent 10 days on remand in Cloverhill Prison after a District Court bail order required a €250 surety he could not initially provide. He was released on 29 July after lodging it.

His counsel said the bench warrant related to another person named Joseph O’Connor, and gardaí accepted responsibility for the mix-up when Connor’s case returned to the District Court in September. Connor sought damages and other orders, including declarations concerning his rights. The judge set a return date in December.
