Meath grandmother (53) toppled her car on Louth street while over the drink drive limit

A 53-year-old grandmother has been fined and disqualified from driving after an incident in Drogheda when she travelled on the wrong side of the road before mounting a barrier causing her car to topple over.
Counsel for Tracy Sheerin said it was “only for an act of God” that she or someone else wasn’t injured “or worse.”
The defendant, of St Mary’s Heights, Donore, Co. Meath, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to drink and dangerous driving charges, two offences which occurred at John Street, Drogheda, on August 1, 2024.
Dundalk Court heard that a car on Shop Street turned right towards John Street. It drove on the wrong side of the road and when the driver attempted to correct, it mounted a steel barrier causing the car to topple over.
Ms Sheerin later provided breath samples which showed an over the limit reading of 90mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.
Barrister Conall Towe said that his client had a dispute with a friend after drinking to excess. She apologised.
It was only for an act of God that the defendant or someone else wasn’t injured or worse.
Ms Sheerin, who earns €400 per week, was aware that she could have been on more serious charges in a different court, counsel continued.
Judge Stephanie Coggans remarked that these were serious issues.
For drink driving a €500 fine and three-year disquialification were imposed. The defendant was fined a further €500 for dangerous driving in addition to a concurrent two-year ban.
