This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Jordan Maguire’s sentence for assault causing harm was increased by the Court of Appeal on 22 July 2024, with Mr Justice George Birmingham imposing three years and nine months, the final six months suspended, and three years and three months to be served.

Maguire pleaded guilty to the charge after attacking a man at the corner of Aston Quay and Price’s Lane in Dublin on 1 January 2023. The plea was entered on 24 July 2023, and the sentence was backdated to that date.

Judge Orla Crowe had originally set a four-year headline sentence, reduced it to three years and suspended the final six months. The State argued that sentence was unduly lenient, while Oisin Clarke BL accepted the offence was very serious but argued the original approach was legally available and involved no error.

The proceedings were reported on 22 July 2024. The report said the victim suffered a significant brain injury, including a brain bleed requiring a craniotomy, and continued to experience cognitive difficulties.
