He pleaded guilty to five counts of assault causing harm arising from incidents at multiple locations in Dublin 15 on 3 January 2024. The proceedings were reported on 16 October 2024.
The court heard that Boyle bit his former partner on the cheek and wrist, dragged her onto a bus, hit her and threatened to kill her. He also headbutted two security guards who had tried to intervene at a Supervalu in Ashtown on the Navan Road.
The injured woman was attacked on multiple occasions and attended St Vincent’s Hospital twice, Sergeant Eimear Hamill told prosecuting counsel Aoife McNickle BL. Boyle had 29 previous convictions, including robbery, public order offences and criminal damage.
Keith Spencer BL, defending, said Boyle’s behaviour was deep-rooted and referred to his father’s abusive and alcoholic background. Sergeant Hamill agreed that Boyle had been addicted to alcohol and cocaine, while Boyle conveyed shame and remorse in a letter.
Judge Orla Crowe set a headline sentence of six years because of the sustained, public nature of the assault and the biting. The four-year sentence was backdated to 9 January, with the final 12 months suspended for two years.
