John Merrick jailed for indecent assault of boy at Dublin school

By Gráinne Nolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

John Merrick was sentenced to nine months in prison, with the final five months suspended, after pleading guilty to indecently assaulting a 10-year-old boy at St Vincent’s Primary School in Glasnevin between September 1979 and June 1980. Judge Pauline Codd said the offending warranted custody and cited the breach of trust and age disparity as aggravating factors.

The court heard Merrick had 21 previous convictions for similar offences. He told gardaí he could not really recall the specific conduct but did not deny what the victim said. The judge also considered his guilty plea and counselling at the Granada Institute, which she said appeared effective because he had not offended since.
