Garret Lawn settles Bank of Ireland repossession complaint case

By Ruairí Dolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Garret Lawn resolved High Court proceedings after the Ombudsman consented to an order quashing its refusal to investigate his complaint about Bank of Ireland’s attempted repossession of his family home. The proceedings were reported on 14 February 2024.

The bank withdrew possession proceedings it had begun in 2018, accepted that it should not have brought them and offered Lawn about €5,000 in compensation in 2019.

Lawn’s complaint also alleged that the bank’s reporting of the proceedings to credit registers had harmed his credit rating. The Ombudsman had declined to investigate, saying it lacked jurisdiction because the dispute had been before a court; it later consented to an order quashing that refusal.
