John Connolly pleaded guilty to stealing €217,203 from IMC Santry at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, reported on 20 December 2019. The thefts occurred between April 2016 and July 2018, after Connolly gained access to the cinema’s main safe. He admitted gambling most of the money, mainly on the lottery.
The court heard that Connolly had no previous convictions and admitted the thefts after directors noticed a shortfall between cinema takings and bank lodgements. His defence outlined gambling addiction, heavy drinking and mental health difficulties at the time.
Judge Karen O’Connor adjourned sentencing and remanded Connolly on bail until 28 February 2020, pending probation and psychiatric reports.
