Jeffrey Dumbrell sentenced for threatening prison officer

Jeffrey Dumbrell was sentenced to three-and-a-half years for threatening to kill a prison officer at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 23 February 2016, with the term running concurrently with his life sentence. He had pleaded guilty to making the threat at Wheatfield Prison on 10 December 2014.
The court heard that Dumbrell threatened to rip the officer’s head off during an aggressive confrontation in a segregation-unit office. Judge Karen O’Connor said it was a serious threat, while his guilty plea meant the officer would not have to give evidence at trial.
Because Dumbrell’s life sentence is indeterminate, the additional sentence did not extend his prison term, although the offending could be considered by the Parole Board when assessing his suitability for release.
