Jaures Kumbu sentenced for firearms offence after guilty plea

By Gráinne Nolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Jaures Kumbu was sentenced at the Special Criminal Court on 10 April 2025 to three years in prison, with the final year suspended for two years, for a firearms offence after pleading guilty the previous year.

The court heard that Kumbu picked up the sub-machine gun used by Tristan Sherry, removed it from the scene and gave it to an unidentified person. Sherry died after being set upon following the shooting of Jason Hennessy Snr at a restaurant on Christmas Eve.

The gun has not been recovered because Kumbu did not bring it to a lawful authority. The court found exceptional circumstances, noting that he had no involvement in bringing the firearm to the restaurant and no choice but to take possession of it; it also considered his youth, lack of previous convictions and rehabilitation.
