Jason Kane was jailed for three years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and production of a knife. The offences occurred outside his address on St Attracta Road, Cabra, Dublin, on 3 September 2018. The proceedings were reported on 23 July 2019.

The woman suffered a 6cm wound to a cosmetically visible area that would leave a permanent scar. Gardaí found a Stanley knife in a nearby bush. Kane told gardaí he initially thought the knife in his pocket was a lighter and intended to stun her with its handle, but accepted it was reckless to produce it.

Garda James Campbell agreed with defence counsel Karl Monaghan that Kane had told gardaí he feared another man who arrived with the woman and whom he said was holding a chisel. Garda Campbell confirmed that gardaí found a chisel in the garden.

Judge Martin Nolan cited Kane’s guilty plea, genuine remorse, work history and willingness to work as mitigating factors. He backdated the three-year sentence to 5 September, when Kane first entered custody on the matter.
