James Meehan ordered surrendered to Northern Ireland over murder

By Ruairí Dolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

James Meehan was ordered surrendered to Northern Ireland by the High Court on 8 December 2023, after a murder conviction and a finding that he breached his release conditions.

Meehan was serving a life sentence for murdering Jim McFadden in 2007. The court said he had been temporarily released to an address in Limavady, subject to a curfew and restrictions on travel.

Justice Melanie Greally found clear evidence that Meehan had breached those conditions after he was absent from the Limavady address during a check in October 2022. She rejected his request to delay surrender while his application to transfer the sentence was pending.

The judge also granted bail pending surrender, remanding Meehan on the same conditions for up to 25 days. She said such bail should be granted only in very exceptional cases.
