James Gallagher was sentenced to two and a half years for theft, dangerous driving and driving without insurance at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, reported on 9 December 2014. The theft occurred at Weir’s Jewellers in Dundrum Town Centre, where Gallagher took a Rolex worth €26,200 from a customer. The sentence was backdated to when he entered custody.

The court heard the watch was never recovered after Gallagher claimed he threw it from a car during a high-speed chase through south Dublin. Gardaí lost sight of him after their patrol car crashed, and he was later identified from shop CCTV. The judge said the chase had put members of the public in considerable danger.
