Ian Maloney was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 6 October 2025 to 10 years in prison, with the final 18 months suspended. Judge Sarah Berkeley backdated the sentence to March 2025 for time spent in custody.

Maloney pleaded guilty to possession of a 9mm semi-automatic firearm with intent to endanger life. The offence took place on Downpatrick Road, Crumlin, on 10 February 2022. The proceedings were reported on 9 October 2025.

Garda Ian Ward told the court that several rounds were fired at a house where a couple, their adult children and a child were present. The front door, a window and a car were damaged. He agreed with defence counsel Michael O’Higgins SC that gardaí accepted it was a reckless discharge rather than something Maloney had set out to do.

After initially making no admissions in interviews, Maloney contacted gardaí through his solicitor while in custody in December 2022 and admitted firing the shots. He said he had not known there was a child in the house and expressed regret.

In sentencing, Judge Berkeley described his early plea and voluntary statement as his most significant mitigating factor. She also noted his mental health difficulties, childhood trauma and efforts to turn away from crime.
