Ian Maloney was awarded €10,000 in the Circuit Civil Court for injuries arising from an April 2019 traffic collision. The award was against the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI), which covers uninsured drivers. The proceedings were reported on 24 February 2026.
Maloney was a back-seat passenger in a taxi that was rear-ended by an uninsured driver. He claimed severe injuries. The MIBI challenged the injuries alleged, arguing that the collision was minor and unlikely to have caused them.
Judge Ian Connolly found an element of exaggeration in Maloney’s evidence but held that it was an “eggshell skull” case because of injuries he had suffered in prison in 2015. The principle means a defendant is responsible for the consequences of their actions even where a pre-existing condition makes those consequences more severe than usual.
At the time of the civil proceedings, Maloney was serving a sentence for possession of a semi-automatic firearm with intent to endanger life. He had pleaded guilty to the offence, committed on 10 February 2022 at Downpatrick Road, Crumlin. In 2025, Judge Sarah Berkeley sentenced him at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to 10 years, with the final 18 months suspended; the sentence was backdated to March for time spent in custody.
