Ian Kelly sentenced to two years, suspended, for assault

By Fionn Kelly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Ian Kelly was sentenced to two years, fully suspended, for assault causing harm at the Central Criminal Court, reported on 18 December 2017.

The offence occurred at an unknown location in Dublin on 7 May 2015, after Kelly drove his former girlfriend to a secluded spot and repeatedly struck her.

Justice Paul McDermott said imprisonment was appropriate but suspended the sentence because Kelly’s apprenticeship, positive employment references and voluntary youth football coaching could be put at risk. Kelly had 10 previous convictions, including an earlier assault conviction.
