Graham Dwyer repeatedly told gardaí he had not murdered Elaine O'Hara during interviews following his arrest. He was arrested at his home shortly after 7am on 17 October 2013. The proceedings were reported on 12 March 2015.
The court heard details of the interviews. Asked whether he could remember where he was on 22 August 2012, the day Ms O'Hara disappeared, Dwyer said he could not.
He denied that two phone numbers attributed to him by gardaí were his and denied sending messages read to the jury. He said he could not explain a diary entry identifying an 083 number as Graham's number, or its registration to his sister's address.
Dwyer said he had viewed erotic horror the night before his arrest. The court heard he had been looking at pictures of women with knife wounds. He told gardaí they were trying to upset him.
Sergeant Peter Woods said a video showed Dwyer putting a plastic bag over Ms O'Hara's head and sealing it with a cable. He said she went limp and fell to the side.
Describing his relationship with Ms O'Hara, Dwyer said he had contacted her through a website. He said he would not cut anyone and described their activity as power, fantasy and makebelieve. He said her scars resulted from self-harm.
Dwyer said the rucksack recovered from a reservoir belonged to Ms O'Hara and held her BDSM gear. He said she might have wanted it moved while in hospital. However, he said he could not explain CCTV showing him leaving her apartment on 13 August with the bag later found in the reservoir.
