Gigi Birsan received an 18-month fully suspended sentence for theft and attempted theft at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 20 July 2023. Judge Orla Crowe had set a three-year headline sentence, but ordered the full term suspended, requiring Birsan to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for 18 months. Birsan pleaded guilty to 103 theft counts and 33 attempted theft counts. The offences occurred between late 2016 and late 2017. The proceedings were reported on 20 July 2023.
The court heard that Birsan stole more than €3,000 from colleagues and people he lived with to sustain a gambling addiction. The report said he had addressed the addiction and returned €3,164. Defence counsel said a probation report assessed him as at low risk of reoffending.
