Geunter Lohse was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court on 15 November 2024 to 13 years in prison, with the final 12 months suspended, for the manslaughter of his mother, Ruth Lohse. Ms Justice Melanie Greally imposed the sentence.
Lohse had originally been charged with murder. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter, a plea the State accepted. The proceedings were reported on 15 November 2024.
Ruth Lohse, aged 88, died after a fire at the home she shared with her son in Coolvoy, Doochary, Co Donegal, on 12 April 2022. Her death was caused by smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide toxicity, with heart disease a contributory factor.
Lohse admitted starting the fire with long matches. He said family comments had driven him to it and claimed he intended to destroy the property, not harm his mother. He also told gardaí that he had wanted to take his own life and had tried but was unable to move her from the house.
Ms Justice Greally said Ruth Lohse had no chance of escape given her position in relation to the fire, and that there was no sign of a credible effort to save her. The judge cited the recklessness of setting fire to an occupied home, the victim’s limited mobility and breaches of trust among the aggravating factors.
The judge set a headline sentence of 18 years. In mitigation, she considered Lohse’s early guilty plea, lack of previous convictions, expressions of remorse and vulnerability. She recommended that he serve his sentence at Castlerea Prison, where he was then treated as a vulnerable person.
