By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Gerard Hutch was found not guilty of murdering David Byrne at the Special Criminal Court on 17 April 2023.

The three judges delivered their verdict that afternoon. Byrne was shot dead at the Regency Hotel in Dublin on 5 February 2016.

The court said Jonathan Dowdall received a significant benefit for giving gardaí a statement, and said his evidence required corroboration.

It found that Hutch had authority over three rifles used in the attack, but said this did not establish that he had possessed them since the Regency murder. The judges said the audio did not establish Hutch’s presence or participation in the killing.
