Freddie Thompson loses appeal over murder conviction

By Donal Gilhooly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Freddie Thompson lost his appeal against his murder conviction at the Court of Appeal, in a judgment reported on 30 January 2024.

Thompson was serving a life sentence for the murder of David “Daithi” Douglas, who was shot dead in his partner’s shoe shop in Dublin in July 2016.

The appeal challenged the use of CCTV footage to identify Thompson, citing image quality, privacy and the lack of Garda records about the identification. The Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal on all grounds, finding the footage admissible and agreeing there had been no breach of privacy.
